Our Sub Ohm Vaping Guide & Tips.

Welcome to the realm of Sub Ohm vaping, known to most as just “Sub Ohming”. This has everything to do with atomizers that are capable of firing at under 1 Ohm of resistance. At the end of the day, Sub Ohm vaping comes down to three words: bloody massive & clouds. If that means anything to you, then you may want to look in to Sub Ohm vaping. Hopefully this article will help answer all of your questions and help you decide whether or not Sub Ohm vaping is right for you. If you just want a better tank with good flavor stick with your EVOD. This is mostly for the extreme vapers but you can now buy these Sub Ohm Vapes without having to do all the tricky stuff with wire making coils etc... just buy a kit and some spare coils and you will be Sub Ohming in no time. Don't forget to reduce your nicotine level, if you use 12mg juice you will probably want to use 6mg in a Sub Ohm set up. Anything over 6mg is usually too strong, 6mg in a Sub Ohm vape is like 12mg in an EVOD/regular vape pen.

    Sub Ohm Vaper

    • Massive Vapor Production – If you are looking to blow bigger clouds than your average vaper then Sub Ohm Vaping may be for you.
    • Intense Flavor – Once you try a tank with a low-resistance (Sub Ohm) build using organic cotton wicking it is hard to return back to your high-resistance ceramic fiber or silica-wicked clearomizers.
    • Warmer Vapor – With higher wattage comes a slightly warmer vape. Of course the wide airflow help to cool this down so that it doesn’t burn your lips, but many people enjoy this warmer type of vape because it helps to simulate the experience of smoking traditional (analog) cigarettes.

Being that Sub Ohm vaping produces bigger plumes of vapor, this can also contribute to providing a mouthful of flavor with each puff. More intense clouds paired with unreal flavor is how it all started. Vapers began building lower resistance coils until they reached below 1 Ohm, hence the name, Sub Ohm. Soon it just became a race to the bottom as builders found new and ingenious ways to achieve lower resistance vapes. Chances are if the guy in the vape shop is blowing bigger clouds than you, it is because he or she is running a Sub Ohm build. In other words, nobody will ever win a Cloud Comp with a build over 1 Ohm.

    How do I Sub Ohm?

The vape game is picking up steam (no pun intended) and is rapidly changing. In the past, if you wanted to Sub Ohm this would first require buying a Mechanical or Box Mod that uses rechargeable 18650 batteries, Kanthal wire and organic cotton for wicking. A basic understanding of Ohm’s law and coil building was a must. Fortunately, these days all it takes to start blowing out colossal clouds is the purchase of a Sub Ohm Tank and pretty much any Mod on the market that can push out 30 watts or higher, such as the 75w Kangertech TopBox Mini.

These are the main three ways that you can enjoy Sub Ohm vaping:

    Sub Ohm vaping

RDA’s (Rebuildable Dripping Atomizers) aka Drippers, were the original way people were able to Sub Ohm. These are usually smaller devices than tanks that attach to Mechanical or Box Mods. They contain a deck where coils are built and attached using a screwdriver and wicked with cotton. Users drip a small amount of juice directly on to the coils and wick before every few puffs.

RTA’s (Rebuildable Tank Atomizers) are for people who want to build coils but do not want to drip. RTA’s are essentially clearomizers that require the user to build the actual coil(s) inside. This gives them freedom to create a coil that will give them the exact type of vape they want. Recently many RTA’s have been geared towards the Sub Ohm vaper with the appropriate airflow options.

    Sense Herakles Sub Ohm Tank

Sub Ohm Tanks, similar to RTA’s except that the coils are disposable and pre-made. This is a great option for people who are new to the whole Sub Ohm thing but do not want to start building. Sub Ohming has never been more accessible since the invention of tanks such as the Atlantis by Aspire and the Kanger Subtank Line. These tanks are getting closer to that RDA/RTA experience.

To Sub Ohm, or not to Sub Ohm?

Here are some reasons why you might NOT want to:

    • Mouth to Lungers – Some people just do not want that lung hit that Sub Ohm vapers live for. These people are often referred to in the vape community as mouth to lung hitters. These kind of vapers prefer a more constricted draw that emulates that of an analog cigarette versus a massive lung hit.
    • Stealth Vapers – Many people vape as a way to get their nicotine fix without having to actually smoke cigarettes. Sub Ohm vaping can draw a lot of attention to you when out in public so for that reason many people will stay away from it.
    • Juice Guzzlers – The bigger the cloud, the more juice it takes to produce. Therefore, Sub Ohming will require larger quantities of e-liquid which will cost more money than your standard setup. For those looking to conserve juice and save money, Sub Ohm vaping just might not be in your budget. Also keep in mind that you are probably going to want to lower your nicotine level when Sub Ohming because bigger vapor also means you are getting a bigger blast of nicotine. Most people that Sub Ohm tend to use lower than 6mg of nicotine and some even go with 0mg.

Do I have to Sub Ohm?

The truth is that Sub Ohm Tanks can also be used with lower wattage devices such as the iStick 30W, for example, by using the 1.2 Ohm coil heads. This is great for people who like the wider airflow options and the organic cotton aspect of a Sub Ohm tank without actually Sub Ohming. The truth is these tanks will still produce a ton of flavor and mountains of vapor with a slightly higher resistance coil head. This is another option for anyone who wants to upgrade to a Sub Ohm tank without having to go out and buy a new Mod.

Hopefully you now have a better understanding of what Sub Ohm vaping is all about. Don’t just follow the trends blindly. Do some research and think about whether or not this is for you. Like anything else, vaping started as a means of quitting cigarettes but has quickly evolved into a hobby. This hobby is now becoming into a sport much like people who rebuild cars for racing. Welcome to the fast and furious world of vaping!

Parts for our Sub Ohm kits:

We always stock replacement coils for the Sub Ohm Pens and Sub Box Mods we sell. We also put a link on the vape starter kit page to the correct coils for the kit you are looking at. If out of stock they are never far away, we try to keep our atomizer and coil products in stock when we introduce new vapes. The Joyetech eGo One and the Kangertech TopBox Mini were added in July 2016.
