Conduction, Convection & Hybrid
Vaporizers Explained.
What do these terms mean?
Everyone is different, some people like conduction vapes and some like the convection and hybrid vaporizers. There is quite a big difference in vaping techniques with the different types of vapes.
With conduction vaporizers like the Pax 3 or the DaVinci IQ2 or IQC for example you can sip away and get into a rhythm of sucking vapor into your mouth, inhaling, sucking again and inhaling and again and again until your lungs are full, hold for a second and exhale a large cloud of vapor. Instant vapor, instant results! Keep in mind that every time you have a quick vape you will be reheating the entire oven load unlike a convection/hybrid vape that can take small pieces at a time that can be fully vaped and dumped in one session. All conduction vaporizers need a full oven (no void) to work properly. That is why the Pax 3 Complete Kit comes with a Half Pack Oven Lid option, you can half fill your oven and so you don't leave a void (empty space) in your oven, the half pack oven lid has an extended bottom section that fills in the top half of the oven when operating your Pax 2/3 with a half load. Without it you would be sucking wind and getting very little vapor. Think of the conduction vape oven as exactly that, an oven and you are not grilling, you are baking your herb. Keep in mind you want to vape at the lowest temp that produces vapor, vaping into the light of a lamp or even ceiling light can help you see the amount of vapor exhaled.
When the vapor starts to die off the best thing to do is leave the temp where it is and open your oven to give the herb a good stir with a tooth pick. This exposes unvaped herb on and closer to the hot oven walls and now that your herb is even drier it will take off again and produce excellent clouds on the same low temp. Don't be in a rush to increase the temp, the lower the better, it's more economical, tastes better, lasts longer, easier on the throat and lungs, your battery will last longer and more. For example, it would be quite normal to vape a full oven load in a Pax Vape on the lowest temp for 70%-80% of the Oven Load, then the higher temps to finish it off. Most of the time we use the lowest temp on all vapes unless a higher temp is your only option when the vapor dies off.
Stirring is essential with most conduction vapes but it is not a big deal, it means you can keep your temp low throughout your session.
Most conduction vaporizers need your herb to be ground very finely, almost into powder form for a Pax. So it is important to understand that all conduction vapes need a grinder to complete the package. Obviously this is an added expense but it is essential. Do not try to use anything like a coffee grinder or blender as you will most definitely damage the herb, the parts you can't see with your naked eye! If you need a herb grinder we have an excellent selection of imported grinders from the US here. All Herb Grinders. It's up to you if you want to use a 2pc or 4pc grinder, most people use a medium or large 2pc or they will buy one of our Non-Stick Ceramic Coated 4pc (Slicks) SLX Grinders, the ultimate in Non-Stick Grinding! SLICKS is the best option when it comes to grinders, no build up, no jamming, no cleanup! There is one more option to assist in the grinding of herb, that's Grinder Grease. It is the most underrated product we have, it is simply the greatest little invention ever for herb grinders. Just dab some grease from the small Grease Stick (like a Chapstick) onto the opposing surfaces of your regular herb grinder and it will glide and twist like never before, it's fantastic stuff! No jamming and the clean up is much quicker and is just a quick wipe. You can buy our imported Santa Cruz Shredder sticks of grease here, "Shredder Grease".
With convection and hybrid vaporizers the technique is quite different to conduction vaping. A herb grinder can be useful for preparing a coarse grind for your convection vape but you don't want it to be too fine because it will build up on your mouthpiece filter screen and block some of the airflow making it hard to draw on. Hybrid vaporizers often work very well because you have the benefits of both a hot oven and hot air.
The Storz & Bickel, Mighty, Mighty Medic, Mighty+ Medic & Mighty+ Vapes and Crafty+ Plus hybrid herbal vaporizers are great examples of hybrid vaping at it's best. You load your herb into the oven (chamber) in any amount and take long slow draws (lung hit) so you can maximize the amount of hot air you draw "through your herb". All the heating of your herb is done by you! Your herb is being constantly heated from the conduction oven but it's the hot air (convection) that flows through your herb that really gets it vaporizing. You can put herb into a convection vaporizer and turn it on full and nothing will happen until you draw on the mouthpiece and pull hot air through the herb. So your very first long draw will most likely not produce any visible vapor at all. The first long draw is getting the herb up to vaping temperature so when you take your second and third draws your herb will be at the temperature you set on your vaporizer. Now you will start to see decent clouds but only if you take a long enough draw. You usually cannot puff on a convection vape, you really need to take your time, there is no need to suck really hard on it either, think about the herb sitting in the oven and the hot air being pulled through it, the longer you do it the bigger the cloud! It does help to give your herb a small stir maybe once per oven load. It freshens it up and allows you to continue vaping without increasing the temperature on the vaporizer. You always want to keep the temp as low as possible on all vapes, it will taste better, last longer, avoid combustion and you will have a much cooler vape and mouthpiece. It isn't uncommon to draw on a convection or hybrid vaporizer for anything up to about 30 seconds. You need a good set of lungs to really maximize the results! Conduction vaporizers are easier to use and make a great first vape but so do convection and hybrid vapes if you follow our guide.
Make sure you understand the difference, all of our vaporizer pages have a Conduction, Convection or Hybrid badge on the page so you know what type of vaporizer you are looking at.

Grinders
Make sure you have a decent herb grinder as grinding is required for most vapes. Convection vapes need a coarser grind so you don't get fine particles blocking your screens. Conduction vapes like the Pax 2 & 3 work best with a nice fine grind, almost powder. Most customers buy a SLX Non-Stick Grinder or an Aerospaced 4pc Grinder. Our best value Herb Grinder is the Croc Crusher, we just introduced this high quality but cheaper grinder to make it more affordable to get a grinder with your new vape. If you want jamming-free grinding and an easy clean up we highly recommend our imported Santa Cruz Shredder sticks of grease here, "Shredder Grease". We have just introduced a brand new Grinder Brand, "Croc Crusher Grinders" from USA. We have 3 colors of the Medium 4 piece Croc Crusher Grinders here and 3 different colors of the Large 2 piece Croc Crusher Grinders here. We have tested them and although they are slightly cheaper than other brands there doesn't appear to much difference, the Croc Crusher is still high quality and super sharp, they work just as well as any other similar grinder especially if you use Shredder Grease. At times, when available we stock Santa Cruz Shredder Herb Grinders in NZ, they are one of our favorite grinders, they work and look great! The Large 2PC SCS Grinder is the best grinder we sell for the Pax Vape.

The most common package purchased would be a Pax 3 Kit, a Large Santa Cruz Shredder 2pc Grinder, a stick of Grinder Grease. We highly recommend you use Grinder Grease unless you have a Non-Stick SLX (Slicks) Grinder.
